Market- Snack Attack!

September is here and everyone is heading back to school. New books, backpacks, pens and pencils are on everyone’s shopping lists. Honestly, didn’t you buy 50 brand new pencils last year? Where did they disappear to? Another big item on the list is snacks. Kids get home from school and they are “starving”! When they get home, surviving to the next meal is unlikely unless you have something to tide them over until the next meal. Of course snacks aren’t just for the students; teachers need something to keep them going while they are reading the 100th book report of the day, and parents will need a little pick me up between soccer practice, scouts, dance class, and karate. And let’s be honest, trail mix is pretty boring once you pick out the M&M’s. We have lots of snacks for you at the City Vineyard and we promise not to be boring.

If you need a snack that is portable and easy to eat on the go, grab a bag of McClure’s Spicy Pickle or Garlic Dill Chips. In 2006, using their grandmother Lala’s recipe, Joe and Bob McClure started McClure’s Pickle Company in Detroit, Michigan. They utilize the freshest local produce available and when it is out of season they call up farms and talk to the growers directly to learn where their ingredients are coming from and how they are being grown. The Spicy Pickle Chips were such a big hit with our staff that when we weren’t able to order them for almost a month, our market manager almost had to make a special road trip to Detroit.

Our pick for the perfect “After School” snack is Thomas Hooks 5 year aged Cheddar and a slice of Creminelli Calabrese, on top of a Lesley Stowe Original Raincoast Crisp. While cheese and crackers may seem clichéd, the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It is well established, from brain-tissue studies, that our mental functions depend heavily on a good supply of healthy fats. According to a study, involving 1,000 adults, performed by U.S. and Australian researchers, it was found that people who regularly have dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt score better on tests of mental ability than people who never, or rarely, consume dairy. Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women and men should consume about 46 and 56 grams of protein a day, respectively. Artisan cheeses have an average of 7 grams of protein per ounce, so you should probably put out an extra piece for yourself.
